Brighton's 6th Birthday
January 2nd, Brighton turned 6! He was so excited to have a birthday and had so many plans from his favorite meals (cold cereal, peanut butter and honey sandwich, pasta), to wanting to go to Phil's classroom, and hoping for more lego sets (we have an insane amount of legos - every birthday, every Christmas, and birthday money).
(I love this picture!)
How did this boy turn 6? It seems like he has always been the little boy, and now, all of the sudden, I am realizing that he not 2 or 3 anymore. I think perhaps his language skills trapped him in the younger years a lot longer than for most children. I am so glad that he is communicating better....sometimes I feel like I have missed out on so much of what he has been thinking about, feeling, learning...because he hasn't been able to tell me...we haven't been able to talk about it. Just today, he was talking to me about heaven. He is actually quite concerned with death, afraid of missing those he loves and the things he loves (like his blanket and Dr. Aardvarkian, his orange aardvark). Afraid of the change it will bring and if I will still be his mom and if we can still be together. Uggg, it tugs at my heartstrings and makes me wink back tears, especially because he has been my most challenging child and I know that I haven't always been the most patient, loving, understanding mom at times. How I wish I could banish those less than perfect parenting moments!!
About Brighton.....he is really quite a kid! Sometimes, I can hardly believe my gene pool is mixed up in him somewhere LOL. He is an extrovert, never shy, energized by talking and socializing, affectionate, always with a hug to share (pretty much my polar opposite LOL). He is quite possibly, the loudest child I have ever met LOL! He is impulsive with a quick temper, a quick recovery, and a quick smile. He is a child of justice and fairness and doesn't like teasing, which is actually quite ironic given some of his behavior choices LOL. He thrives on those tender moments of sweet words, hugs, kisses, and cuddles, and would NEVER let the day come to a close without frequent reminders to "pray with us" and squeeze in one last moment together. He is completely undaunted by his communication challenges. He is really such a precious boy with these amazing character traits that I can't wait to see develop as his matures and grows!
