Garden Tour
We got so much accomplished on the weekend!! I was so excited to see how much the farm came together.
This is Phil's massive undertaking....retaining the hillside. He started on the 3rd layer. Soon the ducks will be moved to a shadier spot up higher on the hillside and the first layer will become garden space. With the concrete, we add the great element of heat retention which is perfect for urban farming in the Pacific Northwest.

Tomatoes in! Also, peppers and eggplant. All the cabbages, broccoli, and cauliflower were killed by some sort of root eating bug. Grrrrrr!
My water feature tucked up against the concrete wall. We have a frog that lives in there. I was not so thrilled to discover that a raccoon had been digging up the water plants that I freshly potted up. Grrrrrr! Between deer, spraying and pooping cats, raccoons, skunks, and bugs, we have had quite the challenge in our endeavors!
This isn't the prettiest view but I dug out quite a few things to make room for more seasonal and edible gardening. I am slowly transforming our "flower beds" into a mix of "garden bones" and space for edible plants. This bed now has two mounds of melon plants. I am hoping that the heat from the house will give them the extra boost to ripen up this year. We haven't had much luck with melons in the past.
Zucchini, squash, a tomato, and cucumbers (far left) are now mixed in with our front bed. We have grapes, currents, and column apples as well. I am hoping to try some more shade tolerant veggies in the cucumber bed. The neighbors have a tall tree that unfortunately shades the bed and drops lots of pine needles and cones on it.
Next project is tackling the garden on top of the retaining wall. I weeded the strawberry, raspberry, and asparagus bed but I need to get the pathway completed and the entire thing mulched! It was (and parts still are) a weedy mess. Plus, the neighbors portion of the hillside collapsed down burying half my strawberry plants and will have to be retained.
