Sawyer starts Kindergarten!

It is hard to believe that I have a school age child!  I am so very blessed to be able to homeschool my children.  I am so glad that this is where the Lord has led both me and Phil!!  There are days when I think, "this is too hard, I can't do it, and I need a break lest I go insane!" BUT I think we will really experience something wonderful and special through this family adventure!

We are still fine tuning our schedule but here is what homeschooling looks like for the Kelly's this Fall:

Up, dressed, breakfast, morning chores...we haven't really gotten to the chore part yet.  The children help with clean up and dishes but we are going to start "chore packs" when I get a chance to get them put together.

B goes down for a nap and we take advantage of this time for rotating groups.  10-15 minutes in each group, one with a math or building activity, one with a miscellaneous skill activity, one with me.  Sawyer works on speech, Evi works on various pre preschool skills, and Jubilee works on workbook pages from Rod and Staff.

Language Arts - all three do an activity.  This week, we are just doing letters - making them with playdough, wikki stix, and crayon rubs (so far).  Evi participates as she is able.  I have yet to decide on a Language Arts curriculum.

Bible and snack - We read a chapter of the Picture Bible and do a study from Leading Little Ones to God.  I love being able to sit at the table, drinking hot tea with the children, with a candle going in the middle of the day while we learn about the Lord.

B is usually up around Bible time

Outside - take Claudia for a walk

Table Activity while I make lunch

Lunch and rest.  B and Evi go down for a nap and Sawyer and Jubilee get a math lesson from Right Start mathematics.  Then, they take books to bed and listen to a story on tape while I take a quick break.

As long as the weather is nice, we will go outside

Tapestry of Grace or other (Science, Art)

Children watch about an hour of tv while I make dinner and do dishes

6:30 Daddy is home Monday through Wednesday
Thursday mornings we are doing gymnastics with a homeschooling group.
Thursday afternoons we are taking a 6 week art class starting in 2 weeks.
Thursday evenings, if the JV game is a home game or close, we will take a picnic dinner and try and make it to half time.
Fridays, we do popcorn and a movie.  No Varsity games this year.

I have not had an opportunity to plan so I am doing simple activities that I put together the night before.  We have not started Tapestry of Grace or AIMS (science).

So...how did it go this week?  Well, I definitely function better when I am organized and prepared.  It has been a struggle for me not to be.  I really enjoy having structure to the day.  It has been fun to spend more interactive time with the children - I enjoy being part of their learning, having conversations with them, really getting to know their personalities even better.  I have also had an "opportunity" to see some areas that need improvement.  Thursday was a challenge and Friday morning picked up right where it left off.  I already know that having young children so close in age is a challenge but I really felt it this week more so than I usually do and with one child in particular!  Today, after cleaning up broken glass all over the floor (the last straw), I loaded up the children for a nice quiet car ride and we went Christmas shopping and then did school in the evening.  Yesterday, the dishwasher broke so that really isn't helping!  My sweet and wonderful husband booked an appointment to get my nails done right before the game so he could watch the children.  Impractical yes, but I felt quite glamorous in my French tips while I was making dinner and cleaning the house.

So, here we are at 10:00 at night.  Phil is at the Varsity game.  The children are finishing up their movie (yes, we are still on Summer schedule).  Phil works all day tomorrow and I am so looking forward to Sunday just so I can  see my husband for more than a few hours at a time!  I am so blessed to be married to my best friend who I just adore being with!

I can barely see straight and B will probably be up in 2 hours for a nurse so I better catch a few winks while I have the chance!
