Foraging and Evi news

My parents were gone this past weekend so they invited us to come over and pick raspberries, strawberries, and beans. Saturday, I packed a picnic dinner and we headed over in the evening. I picked a few quarts of raspberries and made jam. Monday, the children and I went over in the morning and picked more raspberries, a quart of late strawberries, beans, and zucchini. I will say this is a much easier task when Phil is helping with the kids!! I left Evi asleep in the car while I started on the raspberries. She woke up not 15 minutes later quite upset and I hurried to finish the row. Sawyer disappeared while I was gathering up my containers and I found him in the van, keeping Evi company until I could get there. Isn’t that cute!!

Yesterday was somewhat of a weird day. It was Phil’s first official day with students. They had late start so he was in meetings in the morning. I meant to bring him breakfast muffins but I put in a tablespoon of baking soda instead of baking powder and they were not fit for human consumption. Phil called and needed a new outfit because he had spilled something all over himself when he was taking out the garbage. It took me forever to get the kids ready, a new breakfast made, gather up Phil’s clothes and lunch, and head out the door. Things were a little crazy on Phil’s end as well because there was a bomb threat so the upperclassman campus was shut down for most of the morning.

We had a long day and late naps so in the evening we decided to go on a family foraging outing. We went blackberry hunting. We piled into the car and headed for the foothills. There are tons of blackberry bushes and we found a nice patch alongside a huge field. The bushes had been mowed so it was easy (relatively speaking, when you consider the thorns) to get to. It was so pleasant to watch the sun go down and the stars came out. The crickets were chirping and the air was a bit chilly. The kids ran around the field the entire time and had a blast. We stayed until it was too dark to see and Evi was protesting rather loudly because it was way past her bed time.

In other news, Evi, at 8 months old, has finally decided to eat something. She has flat out refused any baby food on a spoon or anything “helped” into her mouth. I have been giving her a little of whatever I have been eating to “play” with for the last 6 weeks or so. Well, she decided that food isn’t so horrible after all. Unfortunately, last night’s dinner didn’t agree with her because her bed was covered in barf this morning. I don’t know what it is about this child and vomit. I figured out that bananas are a trigger food but I don’t know what she ate last night that had such an affect. I am thinking maybe avocado. I can’t believe that I didn’t hear her or that she didn’t wake up and oddly enough last night was the first night that she has slept through the night. She has been getting up every 2-3 hours for the past month (not too happy about this pattern).

By the way, the lacto fermented pickles were vile and I threw them out!
